The mouth of the Miñor river, an outdoor sewer

The mouth of the Miñor river, a jewel of nature included in the Natura network, has become for years an outdoor sewer that prevents the commercialization of local seafoods, due to very high levels of faecal bacteria, well above accepted threshold by Spanish and European legislation. The study commissioned by the Salvemos Monteferro Association, with the logistical support of the Fishermen's Guild of Baiona and the financing of the Baiona Town Hall, puts figures at this scandal. The area had already been cataloged, by the Galicia Costa Hydrographic Plan, in a 'worse than bad' state, and the shellfishing has been stopped for a decade, without any authority feeling worried. The main reason is the serious deficiencies in the municipal clean-up network from Gondomar, Nigrán and Baiona. The Miñor river already carries, before passing through the sewage plant, values greater than 3000 Escherichia coli, a bacterium present in human feces, per 100 mL. The last straw is set by the Gondomar sewage plant, which causes an increase in these values to more than 5000 E.coli/100 mL downstream. The lack of control is widespread. To show an example, A Ramallosa market place spills directly into the Miñor river, with more than 5000 E.coli/100 mL. The only positive point is the allowed values of the Belesar river, which flows into the southern shore of the mouth. As if this issue were not enough, the Muiños river at its mouth in América Beach carries about 7000 E.coli/100 mL and there have already been cases of poisoning from bathing in this touristic sandy spot. We trust the institutions do not wait for even more serious cases to remedy the problem, through investment in clean-up and purification treatments. Money is spent on much less important things.
